POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL

Polytechnic Debate offers students the challenge of competing against other outstanding secondary school students nationally in Policy and Lincoln-Douglas format debates. Poly Debate has established a tradition of excellence and awards including numerous participants in the State and National Championships.

The program is open to any interested student regardless of experience and requires after school research, weekly meetings plus practice rounds on the weekends. Tournament competition may involve travel and the team has competed recently at events in Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, Texas, Kansas and Illinois. Debate develops critical thinking, public speaking, research skills and public policy analysis.

Forensics is seen as an asset for future work in law, politics, education and business. Many colleges also host debate programs and may offer scholarship aid to active members. Interested students are encouraged to attend any lunch meeting at Polytechnic and learn more about this challenging, exciting and rewarding co-curriculum experience at Poly.

Las Vegas	9-2006	Policy: Miller/Sander - Prelims Also, kudos to Steven Sander and Kyle Miller for just missing the elims at Las Vegas losing to a tough Utah team their break round. Cheers to Raymond Jimenez for running anarchy successfully.
USC California Cup	11-5-2006 USC	Policy: Bowen/Matt (Novice) - Double Octofinals Liza/Jackson - Octofinals Congrats to the team of Bowen and Matt for advancing to Double-Octofinals at USC at their first tournament! Also, kudos to the team of Liza and Jackson for going 5-1 in prelims and advancing to the Octofinals. Lisa also received a Speaker Award. Great job all!
Damien	11-12-2006 Damien School	Policy: Sander/Miller - Semifinals Jiang/Stringfellow - Prelims LD: Elizabeth Dervan - Semifinals Stephen Wu - Prelims Raymond Jimenez - Prelims Cheers to Elizabeth Dervan for advancing to the Semifinals at the Damien HS Tournament last weekend. Kudos also to Stephen Wu and Raymond Jimenez for missing on Speaker Points from advancing. Also, a hearty high five to the team of Steven Sander and Kyle Miller for advancing in senior division to semifinals in policy debate plus the team of Kevin Jiang and Stevie Stringfellow for missing on points. Mr. Miller alsotook 4th Speaker and Mr. Sander took 9th Speaker overall. Michael Szeto also won a special award for his ballots.
Northridge	12-3-2006 CSU Northridge	Policy: Sander/Miller - Quarterfinals Anand/Matt (Novice) - Quarterfinals Great job at CSUN. Kudos to Kyle and Steven for going 5-1 and getting to Quarterfinals along with the novice team of Matt and Anand. Matt and Anand were 5-1 in novice division. Steven also took top speaker in varsity division with Matt and Anand also getting speaker awards.
Fullerton	1-5-2007 CSU Fullerton	Policy: Jiang/Stringfellow - Octofinals Anand/Matt (Novice) - 2nd Place LD: Zoe Munoz (Novice) - Octofinals Nathan Min (Novice) - 3 wins, 3 losses Zoe in Novice LD advanced to octas and was First Place Speaker at the tournament. Nathan went 3-3 in Novice LD and missed advancing on speaker points. Kevin/Stevie went 5-1 in Open Policy debate prelims, 9th seed out of 49. They advanced to Octofinals. Matt/Anand were 4-2 in prelims, Matt was 6th speaker overall at the tournment in Novice team. They were 8th seed out of 32. They advanced to the Final Round of Novice Policy taking 2nd Place!
District	3-17-2007 Damien School	Policy: Sander/Miller - 1st Place Kevin/Stevie - 3 wins, 2 losses Jackson/Liza - Semifinals Bowen/Matt - 1 win, 2 losses LD: Stephen Wu - 1st Place Zoe Munoz - Semifinals Congrats to Stephen Wu for taking First in Lincoln-Douglas debate at the District Tournament at Damien HS yesterday and qualifying for the National Tournament. Also to Steven Sander and Kyle Miller for tying for First in Policy Debate and qualifying for the National Tournament. Kudos to Jackson and Liza for advancing to Semifinals in Policy and Zoe in Lincoln-Douglas.
Long Beach	10-11-07	Outstanding job at Long Beach. Novice debaters Sean Hollihan, Mary D'Onofrio and Jenna Lomelli all went 4-2 in their division and missed advancing on the secondary criterion at their first tournament. Also at her first tournament Jane Davidson received a Speaker Award for policy debate. Last but not least, Zoe Munoz went 4-2 in prelims and as a result of a tabulation error will be given a First Place Trophy.
Meadows	10-18-07 Meadows School	Great job at the Meadows School in Las Vegas last weekend. The team of Steven Sander and Kyle Miller went 5-1 and advanced to the Octofinals. Also, the team of Jackson Perry and Liza Starr went 4-2 in prelims but missed advancing on the secondary criterion. Steven Wu also was in the top 15 speakers in Lincoln-Douglas. This was the best Poly did in years at this very competitive tournament.
USC California Cup	11-3-07 USC	Congrats to the senior debate team of Steven Sander and Kyle Miller for advancing to Octofinals at the USC tournament over the weekend. Also, super kudos to Stephen Wu for advancing to the final round in senior Lincoln-Douglas debate taking 2nd Place overall. Stephen also was in the top ten speakers at the tournament overall in senior LD. Very impressive.
Redlands Golden West Invitational	12-21-07 Redlands	Super kudos to the policy team of Steven and Bowen for clearing at the Redlands Golden West Invitational yesterday and getting to the Octofinal round against the top seed. As far as I can tell this is the first time a Polytechnic team has advanced at this national circuit tournament. Outstanding job!
Fullerton	1-4-08 CSU Fullerton	Kudos to Jane and Chris for advancing the Octofinals round at the Fullerton tournament yesterday. Also, to Anand and Matt for going 3-3 and missing on speaker points. Jane also received a Speaker Award.
